Philosophy of Learning

The most important thing to remember about learning is that we are never too young or too old to start learning and it is a lifelong process. Whether we are learning how to tie our shoes, drive a car or about the history of our country, someone is teaching us new things. Just as learning never ends, learning how to teach is continuous as well (Smith-Cochran, 2009). Every individual learns differently and it is imperative as teachers to find the best way in which to teach material so that every student not only comprehends it but retains the information as well.

Building a foundation for learning is crucial. I relate is to building a structure. If there is no foundation, you can try to build it, but chances are it will not stay standing. Learning is similar because if the basics are not taught and mastered, it will be difficult to learn new things that require deeper thinking skills. So in order to build a solid foundation for students, teachers must keep learning how to teach in order to transform thinking and asking those important questions that students need to answer to ensure they are learning to the best of their ability (Smith-Cochran, 2009).

The memories of learning that I have come from an environment in which it was warm and inviting. I believe that the learning environment and type of teaching style plays a large role in how well students will learn and retain information. Students will feel better about themselves as learners and be more motivated to learn if the teacher gives them the encouragement they need and helps them focus on the effort and strategy instead of their ability. It is important to encourage children to express not only their struggles but their achievements, too (Rosemarin, 2009).

The ideal learning environment that I envision has some traditional aspects like each child having their own desk to organize their materials but also newer aspects such as a SMART board to offer interaction during lessons rather than the teacher just dictating to students. I would have a comfortable reading area to promote the love of reading and show students that when they relax, they can be swept into the story. I would have physical picture books but also e-readers so that they can choose the format in which they prefer to read. There would be laptops in order to complete digital projects such as presentations or webquests. I would also have a table for small group instruction such as guided reading, conferencing with students during the writing process or differentiating a math lesson. Most importantly, I will provide my students with the motivation and encouragement that they need to succeed.
